California plumbing permits, city by city, county by county.
Who issues a plumbing permit in each California city, what it costs, which forms you need and which professionals the process requires, sourced from the permit office itself, never from other websites.
Who issues plumbing permits in California
California licenses plumbing contractors at the state level through the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), in classification C-36. Permits and inspections are local: state contractor law leaves a city or county its power to regulate installations through a system of permits and inspections (B&P Code § 7032), and a city or county that requires a building permit must have each applicant state that they hold a CSLB license in full force, with its number, or why they are exempt (§ 7031.5). A plumbing permit comes from the building department of the city or county with jurisdiction over the address.
What each California plumbing permit guide covers
The permitting authority’s name, phone, and address. Current fees, from the authority’s own schedule, with dates. Required steps and professionals. Links to official forms — and an honest note wherever a fee or rule couldn’t be verified.
Published guides
California plumbing permit guides are in production.
Each guide is published only after its fees and process are checked against the issuing office’s own published rules.
Each guide covers one city and is filed under its county. We publish a city’s guide only after verifying its fees and process against the issuing office’s own published rules — coverage grows city by city rather than appearing all at once. Every California county page lists the verified companies filed in that county and links the city guides inside it.
